HI 230 - American Minds I - From Puritanism to Transcendentalism4.00 credits. This course explores the development of American thought from the era of New England Puritanism to the age of sectionalism and Civil War. It will center on close readings of classic texts, essays and speeches penned by a number of significant thinkers including Anne Hutchinson, Thomas Paine, Henry David Thoreau, Harriet Jacobs, and Herman Melville. An analysis of “native” ideas, the class offers students fresh and original ways to think about the American past.
