The Introductory Spanish for Credit Union Professionals Certificate is a 9-credit undergraduate program designed for frontline employees serving Spanish-speaking members. Through three sequential online courses, participants build practical skills in customer interactions, financial terminology, and cross-cultural engagement. Combining asynchronous content with live practice sessions, the program emphasizes speaking proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and trust-building strategies. Learners prepare for ALTA language assessment and gain tools to support inclusive, responsive service within credit union environments. Completion of this certificate strengthens employee capacity to contribute to a culture of belonging and service excellence.
Program Outcomes:
Students will be able to
- Develop introductory communication skills in greetings, assistance inquiries, and basic dialogues essential for exchanges and transactions
- Obtain a beginning-level certificate as assessed by the ALTA language exam. We recommend a level of 4-5 on the ALTA language assessment for finance.
- Identify and describe cultural factors that influence personal finance decisions.
- Develop and implement communication strategies that foster trust, cultural sensitivity, and understanding and support confidence and financial literacy in financial transactions.
- Apply developing skills in credit union customer service interactions.
- Demonstrate confidence in cultivating cultures of belonging, trust, and hospitality.

Admission Criteria:
Students seeking admission to this program must meet the following criteria: - SGPS Admission Standards: All applicants must fully satisfy the admissions criteria established by the School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS), including academic qualifications, documentation, and any other applicable policies and procedures.
- Employment Affiliation: Applicants must be current employees of Members 1st Federal Credit Union at the time of enrollment and throughout their participation in the program. Verification of employment will be required as part of the admissions process.
