HON 246 - HNR HUM Refugees in Global and Regional Context & Advocacy Lessons from Nobel Peace Laureates (PS 246, INT 246) 4.00 credits. (Humanities Core Course) *A Guided Writing and Research Course. This course will offer the intellectual, analytical and research tools to understand the history and complexities of forced migration and refugeehood and their centrality to political, social and economic change in global, national and regional contexts. It will introduce students with an interest in local, national, as well as international career opportunities in human rights, development, refugees, and migration, and develop an understanding of various policy responses from around the world, including our regional context in Lancaster, PA, using extensive partnership with Church World Services. Students will explore the legacy of Nobel Peace Laureates whose work has shaped global refugee policy and humanitarian action—such as Fridtjof Nansen, who pioneered international refugee protections; the Quakers, honored for their post-war refugee relief; and UNHCR, awarded twice for its global refugee support. We will also examine the personal journeys of Laureates like Nadia Murad, Malala Yousafzai, and Andrei Sakharov, whose lived experiences as refugees or exiles inform their peacebuilding efforts. The course will analyze global responses to refugees by examining the policies of the United States, European Union, and Turkey. Particular attention will be paid to the driving forces behind the record-breaking numbers of refugees around the world, such as civil wars, risk of genocide, organized crime, terrorism, ecological disasters, and lack of human security. *Prerequisite(s): EN 100 . Signature Learning Experience: Community-Based Learning. Offered Summer semester.
