Student Learning Outcomes for History:

Students will be able to:

Draw effectively on primary and secondary sources to analyze historical developments in the U.S. and Europe.
Analyze major issues in historiography.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing, as appropriate to the discipline of history.

The History major requires:

Surveys - One course must be taken in each of the two areas:

US History

HI 101 - HUM United States History to 1877 4.00 credits. or
HI 102 - HUM United States History Since 1877 4.00 credits.

Western Civilization

HI 114 - WCH Western Civilization I 4.00 credits. or
HI 115 - WCH Western Civilization II 4.00 credits.

Upper-Level History - complete at least one course in each area (cultural, literary, and political history)

Cultural History

HI 325 - The Beatles: A Cultural History 4.00 credits.
HI 341 - African American History 4.00 credits.

Literary History

HI 308 - History in Literature 4.00 credits.
HI 342 - F. Scott Fitzgerald 4.00 credits.

Political History

HI 303 - Jeffersonian America 4.00 credits.
HI 304 - The Civil War 4.00 credits.

Five History Electives:

Only one course may be at the 100 level.

Capstone - Enrollment limited to juniors and seniors

HI 450 - Topics in Historiography 4.00 credits.

Internship Requirement (2-4 credits):

HM 472 - Internship in Arts and Humanities 2.00 credits.
HM 474 - Internship in Arts and Humanities 4.00 credits.

First Year Suggested Courses:

FYS 100 - First-Year Seminar 4.00 credits.
EN 100 - PLE First Year Writing 4.00 credits.
HI 114 - WCH Western Civilization I 4.00 credits. or
HI 115 - WCH Western Civilization II 4.00 credits.
Power of Language: Other Core course (4 credits)
100/200- Level History Elective course (4 credits)
Two Elective courses (8 credits total)
