Catalog Addendums

Elizabethtown College endeavors to accurately present our programs and policies to our prospective and enrolled student community.   Academic Affairs make every effort to ensure the published catalog, class schedule, and other public information presented is correct and up to date.  Elizabethtown College reserves the right to add, amend, or retract any statements, regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures.   The College assumes no responsibility for misinterpretation by students of policies and procedures presented in this Catalog, or the Addendum.   School Deans, Academic Advisors, and members of the Office of Registration and Records are available and support students in achieving their academic goals and to clarify college policies and procedures.

What is an Addendum?

Elizabethtown College publishes our annual Catalog in May of each year.  The Addendum is a summary of additions, reactivations, deactivations, and changes that have been approved through faculty governance since the initial Catalog publication.   All approved changes and additions made this academic year are reflected in this addendum.  The information contained in this publication is the most accurate and up to date information pertaining to academics at Elizabethtown College.

The following question and answer section provided guidance to common questions about how to use this important document.   Students should seek guidance on addendum items through the support of their Academic Advisors, and Dean, for course and program planning.

**Please note, the contents of the Addendum do NOT appear in the PDF version of the full Catalog.

Policies

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) changed to Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) based on Council for Adult and Experiental Learning (CAEL) recommendations.

(Effective October 15, 2024)

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a process by which learning mastered outside of a formal classroom is reviewed for college-level equivalency. CPL may be granted for learning acquired from work and life experiences; civic, community, or volunteer work; individual study; and in-service training sponsored by associations, business, government, and industry, including the military. CPL is a rigorous process in which a student must demonstrate that he or she has college-level learning, which entails knowledge, skills, and competencies obtained as a result of prior experiences in a particular area. CPL is awarded based on learning, not experience. CPL provides students the opportunity to validate their relevant learning.

CPL creates a pathway for our non-traditional students to accelerate their academic progress toward earning an Elizabethtown College degree. Any Elizabethtown College program approved to award credit through CPL will have it clearly published on their school’s webpage. Credit for CPL will only be awarded when:

  • A student is an actively enrolled, degree-seeking student at Elizabethtown College and has completed a minimum of 6 Elizabethtown College credits prior to applying for CPL.
  • Students interested in pursuing CPL credit should check with their academic advisor to ensure that they do not enroll into a course for which they may later be seeking to earn CPL equivalent credit.
  • Students must be in good academic standing with Elizabethtown College.
  • Students must be in good financial standing with Elizabethtown College.
  • A student has not previously attempted, completed, or transferred in the equivalent course for which CPL credit is being sought.
  • The CPL credit must apply to the student’s major or program of study.

There is a $450 fee charged for the assessment of a CPL portfolio, due upon submission and regardless of the outcome.

To obtain CPL credit for the types of learning listed above, the student may:

  1. Contact an approved prior learning assessment service. Once the assessment is complete and a transcript is available, the student may submit an official copy to the Registration and Records Office for evaluation of transfer credits into their Elizabethtown College degree program. Approved providers include: The American Council for Education (ACE), The National College Credit Recommendation Service (National CCRS) and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).
  2. Complete a one credit course, PL 1500 - SGPS Experiential Learning Portfolio, which will prepare the applicant to submit a Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Application and Portfolio. The portfolio must demonstrate college-level competencies and writing skills and include a narrative explaining how their specific experience aligns with the student learning outcomes of a course(s) in the Elizabethtown Catalog.  Each statement must be accompanied by tangible evidence and support documentation.

The instructor for PL 1500 will be a trained CPL coordinator who will assess the student’s portfolio and recommend CPL credits to the Record and Registration office.

The CPL coordinator will consult with an appropriate subject matter expert (Dean, Chair, Director, Professor) before finalizing their analysis and recommendation.

A maximum of 32 credits may be earned through CPL and Transfer Credit through Examination policies. CPL credits do not count toward residency or the students’ academic grade point average. Students are responsible for understanding the impact of CPL credits transcribed by Elizabethtown College and future plans for transfer, and or additional degrees.
