MME 505 - Social Emotional Learning for Music Teachers 3.00 credits. This course explores foundations of social-emotional learning (SEL) and the explorations of music pedagogies as a vibrant sites of SEL. This class uses a text on mindfulness and course materials and videos found in the Etown Edge Course on social emotional learning as instructional content. Teachers will explore self-care and caring environments, CASEL’s SEL framework, and research on prosocial behaviors, self-control, self-regulation, emotions, belonging, anti-bullying, and trauma-sensitive practices of social emotional learning. Students in this course are required to complete a minimum of 24 hours of professional development in an approved World Music Drumming, Orff, Kodály, Dalcroze, Music Learning Theory, or other pedagogical workshop. Students in this course will be asked to write a philosophy of SEL, read the Jennings text, construct curricular documents, and reflect on intersections of research and pedagogical practice. Summer term.
